Big Announcement & a Giveaway

by Kelly on February 23, 2010

Whenever my blog’s gone quiet it’s a good indication that my life offline is anything but. So given that this is my first post in almost two weeks you might assume that something huge is going on, and you’d be right. I usually keep this blog focused on my cooking with only slight appearances from my personal life. I’m a bit of a private person so this approach comes naturally to me. But the funny thing about blogging is that what’s public and private easily blur. Friends become readers, readers become friends.  (If nothing else I thought my fellow bloggers deserved to know why I’ve been so bad at commenting lately.  I promise I shall return!)

For the past year I’ve been a little restless. I liked my job, but something was missing. I tried to be grateful, to remind myself in this economy that having a job at all is a plus. I found ways outside of work to challenge myself like teaching at my alma mater, taking photography classes and entering recipe contests.  I was still a wee bit restless, but content that my life, as it currently stood, was enough.

But then a moment came that changed everything.  My boyfriend of nearly four years broke up with me and I had to re-evaluate everything.  I took time to regroup, to be selfish and ask myself, for the first time in a long time, what I wanted.  I learned I was a million times stronger than I gave myself credit for.  I thought about where my future was headed.

And finally I have an answer… at least for the short term.

Next Monday I officially move to Chicago.  I’ll still be working in marketing, so it is not an entire overhaul.  But for a girl who has lived in Boston since 2001 it is still a big adventure.  There will be new friends, new restaurants, new experiences, and hopefully new cheeses.  🙂  You’ll have to bear with me for the next couple of weeks.  My kitchen is in boxes and I have no idea exactly where I’ll be living so I’m not sure how much cooking I’ll be doing, and that any of what I do make will be post-worthy.  However, I’m planning to fill those weeks with restaurant reviews and best of post so hopefully the blog will be more active than it has been.  I’d also love some guest posters so if you’re interested email me.

To thank you, my readers, for all your support since I first started my blog almost two years ago I figured it was time for a giveaway.  Since cheese is such a passion for me it had to be…

This book is an unbelievable resource whether you consider yourselves a cheese enthusiast or just like the occasional slice of cheddar.  It’s thorough and approachable, everything a good cheese resource should be and I’d like to give a copy to you.

To enter, leave a comment telling me what your favorite cheese is, be it artisan or Kraft Singles.  (I won’t judge!)

For more entries*:
1. Tweet about this giveaway (I am @cupcakeartist).
2. Follow me on twitter.
3. Mention this giveaway on your blog.
4. Add me to your blogroll.

*Please be sure to come back here and leave another comment for each additional entry telling me what you did.  (i.e. If you tweet about this and add me to your blogroll, come back and add a separate comment for each.)

Congrats to you for making such a difficult decision – that really takes courage. I am sure that you will be successful in life, girl!

Well, since cheese is my favorite food, I could never just pick one! I’ll go with one of my favorites – smoked cheddar. 😉

brandi February 23, 2010 at 10:28 am

I love a good sharp cheddar.

ashlee February 23, 2010 at 11:23 am

That’s awesome! I’m sure you’ll love Chicago! I’m so happy for you for putting yourself first and taking a risk. Yay!!!!

Kerstin February 23, 2010 at 11:33 am

Congrats Kelly, how exciting! We lived in Chicago for 6 years before moving to Boston and I really miss it – you’re going to love it there!!! It’s a much bigger city with more to do (and better restaurants in my opinion) and it’s cheaper than Boston. I would actually love to move back. Let me know if you’d like any suggestions on where to live! I have a list somewhere I wrote up with must-eats for friends too and I’ll see if I can find it!

Goat cheese is my favorite 🙂

Kerstin February 23, 2010 at 11:33 am

And you’re on my blogroll of course 🙂

Nurit - 1 family. friendly. food. February 23, 2010 at 11:43 am

Good luck, Kelly.
I send you a big virtual hug.
When you decide to move to Seattle, rememebr you already have a friend here (me ;-)).

Jen (Modern Beet) February 23, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Good luck with the move and fresh start! Chicago is such a great city and I hope you love it!

And my current favorite cheese is the french cow’s milk cheese St. Marcellin… or maybe Cowgirl Creamery’s Red Hawk triple cream….

Cara February 23, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I was wondering where you were! Congrats on your new venture, how exciting. Chicago is a great city, especially for foodies! Wishing you the best of luck.

Melissa February 23, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Good luck with everything!

I loved the camembert cheese featured on most cheese plates in France. It tasted better there than it does here in the US. I also love brie and goat cheese.

Elina February 23, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Big move! Chicago is a great city – I’m sure you’ll be very happy there. Stay in touch! 🙂
My favorite cheese is aged gouda.

Sarah February 23, 2010 at 2:42 pm

I must say, big props to you for taking such a leap! I’m sorry things have been a little less than A+ in your world, but you are taking such a brave and EXCITING step moving to Chicago. I’ve never been there and it’s definitely a place I want to visit. And hey, closer to SF 🙂

I can’t pick a favorite cheese, since I have a favorite for different situations- triple cream brie or Humboldt Fog for eating plain with french bread, fresh mozzarella and provolone on pizza, real parmesan on pasta, and Old Amsterdam gouda for munching solo.

Erin February 23, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Wishing you all the best in your new endeavors and adventures! I’m looking forward to seeing all of your Chicago successes documented in full on this blog. I sincerely admire you for taking such a momentous leap of faith! Please keep in touch!

5 Star Foodie February 23, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Kudos! And I hope everything works out for the best. I’ve got to say brie is easily one of my favorites.

Terri February 23, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Best of luck! I would have to say brie is my all time favorite.

Laura February 23, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Sophie @ yumventures February 23, 2010 at 9:25 pm

That is so exciting that you are moving, but so sad that we only just met! My best friend from high school just moved to Chicago, and she loves it! Actually, EVERYONE I know who has ever been there loves it =) The bets of luck with this amazing move! Moving cities can be scary (I just did it) but you will make new friends fast!

My favorite cheese, btw, is cave aged Gruyere!

Shannon February 23, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Reply February 23, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Congrats! Good luck, and have fun in Chicago. There is another great blogger that lives in Chicago, you should look her up –

My favorite cheese is goat cheese.

Jessi February 23, 2010 at 10:11 pm

You really want me to pick a favorite? Uh, I can’t really do that. I love too many cheeses! I crave different ones at different times or tend to prefer some for a while. My current obsessions are swiss and pepperjack. Before that, I had a major thing for old cheddar, and before that, I was using fresh mozzarella like crazy, lol.

Jessi February 23, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I tweeted.

Jessi February 23, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I followed you on Twitter, too.

(I’ve been subscribed to your site for a while now, but hadn’t thought to look for you on Twitter.)

CaSaundra February 24, 2010 at 9:51 am

Favorite cheese is definitely parm! Ohh wow, congrats on the big move! Unfortunately I will miss you then when I come to Boston because I won’t be coming till the 7th–best wishes!

Joelen February 24, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Congrats on the difficult decision but do know that Chicago is ready to welcome you! If you’re looking for a foodie group ( or are interested in meeting fellow Chicago food bloggers (, do check us out! We’d love to have you join in on all the fun foodie adventures we have! As for my favorite cheese, it’s definitely Cypress Grove’s Humboldt Fog. I’m in heaven with a wedge of that a some good artisan bread! Best of luck on your move and hope to meet you!

Chou February 24, 2010 at 11:00 pm

You’re going to my FAVORITE city, ever! Hooray!!! I have the cheese primer (and love it), so count me out of this, but Jasper Hill Clothbound or Humboldt Fog are my favorites. Yum. Oh yeah, I can’t wait to hear about your Chicago adventures. And come see you (July-ish?)! Things you must do: ice skate in Millenium Park, go to as many free concerts as possible, run along the lake front regularly (try south-side, it’s less crowded), eat pecan sticky buns at Bonjour Bakery in Hyde Park, dance in Grant Park in the summer, take one of the architecture boat tours that is actually narrated by the architectural society, go jump off the sand dunes in Indiana, and fly a kite at the 34th street beach. And buy lots of cheese at Fox and Obel. Then drive along Lake Shore Drive, up it and down it, in good and bad weather, because no matter what, it’s beautiful.

Mark Scarbrough February 25, 2010 at 9:27 pm

I’m sorry–and congratulations, all at once! Sorry that break-ups are what they are–and glad you’re making a move. I did that, too, once upon a time–left Austin after a break-up and went straight for Manhattan. I never looked back. It was the best decision of my life. I can only hope the same for you.

The Duo Dishes February 25, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Congrats to you! Chicago’s one of the best five cities in the States, so you can’t go wrong. Much success with everything!

Oh, and let’s go with goat cheese. Yum!

Renee H February 26, 2010 at 9:49 am

Hey Kelly! No wonder I haven’t seen you in ages, that is ALOT to be going on at once! Congratulations on everything! I have some great marketing connections in Chi, so if you are looking for people to connect to, I would be happy to do some intros!

Anyway, on to the matter at hand, I love ALL cheese, I am totally non-discriminating and love to be introduced to new cheeses!

Renee H February 26, 2010 at 9:49 am

Just became a twitter follower! Look for me @renh77

Renee H February 26, 2010 at 9:50 am

Meghan February 26, 2010 at 9:57 am

I love all kinds of cheese! I think my favorite is a basic cheddar because I think it goes with everything and I end up eating it by the pound.

Meghan February 26, 2010 at 9:59 am

I follow you on twitter, Kelly (@megwith13)

Sarah @ Semi-Sweet February 26, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Kelly! I’m so behind on reading posts, so 3 days late, here I am. Way to rally! I’m sorry life’s been rough lately, but so glad that you’re making some changes and taking charge of the situation. I look forward to following you from your new digs. Take care!

DianasaurDishes February 27, 2010 at 3:58 am

I was wondering if you were alright. So sorry to hear about the break up, even if good has come of it. I know that’s a difficult painful experience. So cool you’re taking such a huge step and heading to Chicago, really proud of you! Any chance you’ll visit Seattle anytime soon? I totally miss you!

Oh yeah, my current favorite is mimolette. In fact I have a post on it scheduled for Monday!

Mommy RD March 1, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Congrats on the new job and the big move! What a great place to move to.

I had a similar situation a few years back, where I made a huge career change, moved, and parted a 5 year relationship. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but the best. I know feel confident I can do anything! You will love your new experience!

Can’t wait to be along for the ride and hear about your new experiences, job, and new city!

Sues March 1, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Awww good for you!! I’m sad to hear you’re leaving Boston, but I’m sure you will have an awesome new adventure! And we’ll definitely have to make plans to meet up at future foodie events 🙂

By the way, if I had to move ANYWHERE it would be Chicago. I know a ton of people there who I met through blogging, so if you need some awesome people to hang out with, let me know. One of my good friends lives in Chicago ( I met her through blogging and she’s the best of the best 🙂

Ashley A March 1, 2010 at 10:54 pm

Sarah March 3, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Congrats on the life-changes! I admire your strength and courage. This might just be exactly what you needed to cure your restlessness! Oh, and it’s all true – Chicago is a great city! ?
I can’t pick just one favorite cheese, but I can whittle it down to two, I suppose: a good, mild brie, or bleu. Mmmm, cheese…

Beth G March 4, 2010 at 10:44 am

Congrats on the big move, that’s awesome :o)

I’m a goat cheese fanatic. I love it on everything…sandwiches, melted into butternut squash soup, crumbled on salads, it’s definitely my favorite. My husband and I are actually taking a Cheese 101 class next week!

Nicole (dishin') March 4, 2010 at 5:14 pm

I’m sorry to hear about your break-up but it sounds like you have a great attitute about everything and you’re taking charge of your life! I have never been to Chicago but I’ve heard nothing but good things and I’m sure it’s all true! Enjoy your next step!!!
