Fromage Friday: Link Love

by Kelly on December 11, 2009

fromagefridaysNow that class is over I’m getting back to my one true love  - cheese.  I’ve not been able to keep my beloved Fromage Fridays feature as frequent as I would have liked for the past few months due to all the obligations I took on, but now that things have mellowed out I’m coming back to it with force.  Expect more cheesemaking tutorials, artisan producer interviews, and product reviews.  Not to mention tips on pairings and cooking with cheese.  If you have ideas for things you’d like to see me cover please do not hesitate to leave me a comment with your suggestions or email me. Got a favorite cheesemaker you’d like me to feature or a burning question you need answered?  I’m all ears.

Today I wanted to spotlight some great cheese-related finds around the web.  I spend a lot of time – more than I would like to admit – surfing the web for cheese information in one format or another and these are some of my favorites.

Cheese + Champagne – If you’re anything like me, your RSS feeds are on overload so you add new blogs judiciously.  This blog though, is worth an add.  Two bloggers, one based in MN and the other in DC, eat their way through the Wine Spectator “100 Best Cheeses List.”  In addition to their mouthwatering cheese reviews they also list cheese-related happenings in DC & MN.

Not sure what cheeses you might like?  The famed Murray’s Cheese of NYC has a quiz to help you find your virtual cheesemonger, who then gives you suggestions based on your likes and dislikes.  I’m all about silly quizzes and this one actually has its use.  After taking the quiz I got the following:cheesemonger

And don’t worry.  Oozing and stank not your thing?  There is a cheesemonger for you too.  The site is also loaded with other great information so it’s a great first stop if you’re trying to get your bearings with cheese.

And then there is the tremendously awesome Grilled Cheese Invitational, which describes itself as:

The Grilled Cheese Invitational (GCI) is the largest, craziest, and most exciting Grilled Cheese cooking contest in the country and is the best thing to happen to sliced cheese since sliced bread!  The GCI promotes an almost scary pursuit of perfection in a Grilled Cheese Sammich and allows for amateur and professional chefs to compete side-by-side in the hopes of becoming a true Grilled Cheese Champion.

Yum. I’m especially intrigued by the category nicknamed “Honey Pot” which is for sweet grilled cheeses that could be served as desert.

What about you?  Do you have any favorite cheese-related sites I should be sure and check out?

Well, I can’t say I know the first thing about cheese, but if you’re willing to venture into vegan alternatives, I have heard amazing things about Dr. Cow. It’s nut based and aged with various bacterias and such like real cheeses. I’m still dying to taste it myself!

I’ve heard of that Grilled Cheese Invitational. How crazy good that must be. I can’t resist melty cheese and to have it in so many guises in one spot would just be pure heaven.

Hannah – That sounds amazing. I’ve been really curious about vegan cheese and was wondering if there was one that involved more of the bacterias. Definitely checking this out.

Carolyn – Me either!
