Blogger Secret Ingredient – Chocolate: Part 2

Given that chocolate is my favorite ingredient is it any surprise that I decided to make not just one but two recipes using this killer ingredient?  This recipe was inspired by Oliver.  Since I first adopted him back in April I’ve been making homemade dog food for him whenever I have time.  The side effect is that whenever I’m cooking in the kitchen he automatically assumes I’m making something for him.  He’ll hover in the kitchen offering up every trick in book in hopes of scoring a morsel.  He looked so heartbroken when he couldn’t tuck into a bowl of chili that I decided to make a creation just for him.  This poses a bit of a challenge since chocolate is a no no when it comes to cooking for dogs.  However, all of my research uncovered a dog friendly alternative: carob.  With some carob powder and chips as well as a base recipe from Good Food for Dogs I was able to whip up some delicious Brownie Bones.  These tasty treats were much beloved by my pooch.  He happily gobbled these bones down and I imagine he would have gone even MORE nutty had I added chunks of these as a topper to his favorite Yoghund.  Try these for the favorite pup in your life and you’ll be sure to be showered with puppy kisses.

Brownie Bones
 Adapted from Real Food for Dogs
I got 8 brownie bones plus small scraps for training, but your yield will depend on the cookie cutter used.

Ingredients:

-1/2 cup vegetable oil
-2 tablespoons honey
-1 cup whole wheat flour
-3 eggs
-1/2 cup carob chips
-1/4 cup carob powder
-1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Method:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  In a medium bowl, blend together the honey and oil thoroughly.  Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.  Pour into a greased 9×9-inch pan.  Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until set.  Let cool and then cut into bones or desired shapes with cookie cutters or a knife.

I love this idea! I’ll admit to never making homemade biscuits for our dog, but I just might try this recipe. The carob bones are adorable, and I’m sure Shelby would love them.

This is a great recipe – my daughter has been wanting to make treats for my MIL’s dog (who’s named Oliver, coincidentally!) – I smell a weekend project here! Question – do you have a good source for fun cookie cutters around Boston?

Sophie – Hehe. There is nothing saying you cannot eat them. In fact, I actually tried one out of curiosity. I’ve tried all the treats (but not the stews) I made for my dog to see how they taste. These bones have a very strong carob flavor, but are a little bit on the dense side, not that it bothered my dog one bit.

Lauren – I have a feeling that is probably the NORMAL thing to admit to. Most people I meet think I am nuts for cooking for my dog. If you do cook these for Shelby I am sure she would adore them.

Sherri – I think these would make great holiday gifts for a dog lover. Before I even had a dog I made dog biscuits for a MoveOn.org bake sale and they were a huge hit.

Jessica – You’re very welcome for the visit. I’m glad to know my pup isn’t the only spoiled one out there. Everytime I go to PetsMart I get sucked into every unique dog treat they have.

Semi-Sweet Sarah – I love weekend cooking projects. Unfortunately I don’t have a really great source in Boston. :-( I’ve picked up quite a few sets from Michael’s and JoAnn Fabrics after the holidays (I always wait till they go on clearance) and tend to pick up an odd cutter here and there when I take day trips to places like Portsmouth, NH since they have nice specialty cooking stores there. The best place I have found around Boston is the Sur Le Table store in Chestnut Hill. They do have some cute cutters and odd kitchen things. I got some dog cutters there (a scottie & another breed) that were very, very cute.

Super cute!!

My bulldog is extremely sensitive to any other foods other than his prescription vet food, so unfortunately he couldn’t do these, but it
would be fun to make em’ for Christmas presents for other family
pets!
